UNEMPLOYMENT
RATE — STATE ELECTORATES
479. Ms J.M. FREEMAN to the Minister for
Training and Workforce Development:
I have a supplementary question. I have
stood in this house and made the minister aware that one in four people in the
Mirrabooka–Balga area is unemployed. We now have data that shows that,
in the whole of the electorate, 17 per cent are unemployed. She is the Minister
for Training and Workforce Development. I have raised this with her. What is
she doing?
The
SPEAKER : This is not a speech, member for Mirrabooka. Short questions!
Ms
J.M. FREEMAN : What is the Minister for Training and Workforce Development
doing to deliver to these people who are in urgent need of employment
assistance and TAFE training?

AnswerView source ↗

Clearly, the member was not
listening. I am reforming the TAFE sector to make it efficient and to ensure
that it can deliver programs where we need them to people who need them to get
them into jobs. I am delivering efficiencies through the sector, so that
instead of money going into administration jobs, it is going into training. It
is revolutionary! Do I fund administration jobs or do I fund training
positions? We work with private registered training organisations and we work
with the Department of Training and Workforce Development to deliver a large
suite of programs. I would be happy to sit down with the member for Mirrabooka
and give her a three-hour briefing on all that we are doing in training and
workforce development in her community.
Ms
J.M. Freeman interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Mirrabooka, I call you to order for the first time.
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : It is a not insubstantial commitment of this government.
Ms
J.M. Freeman interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Mirrabooka, I call you to order for the second time.
Quick answer, minister.
Mrs
L.M. HARVEY : Since we have been in government, over $288 million has been
invested in TAFE infrastructure, and over the next four years, over $2 billion
will go into training. That is what we are doing for our community, and we will
do it efficiently and effectively.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for West Swan, I call you to order for the first time.
Member for Cockburn, I would stop shouting out if I were you.
