While the Australian Labor Party was in opposition it supported funding for a 36-hole golf course in Kalgoorlie at a cost of $17.5 million. (1) Will the minister advise whether the Government intends to proceed with this pre-election support? (2) If the answer is no, what does the Government intend to do about funding for a golf course in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder vicinity? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The premise of the question is incorrect.  Labor’s commitment before the election, as stated in our policy document “Working for the Goldfields”, is that Labor will - support the development of a grassed 18-hole golf course through LandCorp and the Department of Land Administration. The Labor Government has every intention of keeping this commitment. (2) Unfortunately, the community was misled by the previous Government into believing that funding was available for a 36-hole golf course.  The new Government, however, is continuing negotiations with the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the three existing golf clubs in that city to develop the most appropriate method of progressing this matter.  Action and not false promises is the Government’s priority.
