HOUSING APPROVALS —
AUSTRALIAN BUREAU OF STATISTICS
999. Mr D.C. NALDER to the Treasurer:
I have a supplementary question. Is
the Treasurer going to ignore the concerns of the tradies out there that the
policy the Treasurer announced is not broad enough —
Mr P.C. Tinley : You have got
to admit that since 2013 you lost most of them—most of the approvals
since 2013!
The SPEAKER : That is a fair
comment, I suppose, but this is not the place to do it, Minister for Housing. I
call you to order for the first time.
Mr D.C. NALDER : Is the
Treasurer going to ignore the concerns of tradies out there who believe that
his current policy is not broad enough and is damaging other aspects of the
housing industry?

I reflect back to the day that the
Premier, the planning minister and I announced the policy at an apartment
complex being built in South Perth. As I was
walking to the location, I had a chat with a couple of tradies; in fact, they
wanted some selfies with me, which was quite nice I thought!
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr B.S. WYATT : To be fair,
they thought I was Paul Papalia, but, nonetheless, as Minister Papalia, I outlined
in the way only Mr Papalia could, the policy we were announcing! I did it in
the way that Minister Papalia does—in great
detail and at great length! Those two tradies who had a selfie with Minister
Papalia were delighted by the policy , because they were working on that
building and understood that Stirling, which was building the apartments, had a
range of other properties that the policy would stimulate activities on.
Looking around at my colleagues, we are motivated by nothing other than jobs.
We are motivated by the fact that we want tradies working. I think that is why
the policy has been very well received both by tradies and those investing the
capital and ensuring that these off-the-plan apartments will get developed.
Coming back to the data that the member for Bateman referred to in the original
part of his question, I think it confirms exactly why this policy was
necessary.
