This Government is alarmed at the impact this activity is having on the sustainability of WA fisheries and is firmly committed to ensuring the Federal Government puts in place the necessary measures to address this significant problem. In the course of the 2005/06 financial year I reacted promptly to the increasing problem and provided an additional level of compliance presence in the North of the State. This included basing the patrol vessel Walcott in Broome, manned by fisheries and police officers, and basing another patrol vessel at One Arm Point and establishing joint patrols with the Bardi community to protect their valuable trochus stocks. 1(a) Appropriations 2004/05 2006/07 Variance $'000 $'000 $'000 Recurrent 23,869 26,236 2,367 +9.9% Capital 8,950 1,829 TOTAL 32,819 28,065 The Table illustrates the extra funding provided by the Government to address fisheries related issues. The funding available for fisheries related issues in 2006/07 has been further enhanced through the efficiencies that will flow from the introduction of shared services. 1(b) The funding available for fisheries related issues in 2006/07 has been enhanced through the efficiencies that will flow from the introduction of shared services. This is being reflected in reduced costs in 2006/07 (2) The 2006/07 Budget includes additional Fisheries and Marine Officers to ensure compliance in marine parks is maintained at an appropriate level. (3) The 2006/07 Budget includes additional Fisheries and Marine Officers to ensure compliance in marine parks is maintained at an appropriate level.
