I thank the member for Joondalup for
the question. Indeed, 2014 has been a great year for the Department of Housing.
I am proud to advise the house of some of our achievements that culminated,
last week, or it might have been the week before, in the Department of Housing's
shared equity expressions of interest program being named the overall winner
for the 2014 Premier's Award for Excellence in Public Sector
Management.
That program has delivered about 850 houses to
low to moderate-income earners, which provides them with an opportunity to own
their own home. It has also delivered significant benefits for the government;
indeed, we have embedded capital equity of about $58 million in those homes.
That program has created lots of jobs and contributed to the industry by
keeping its head above water a couple of years ago—all delivered at no
cost to government. That was a great outcome and a well-deserved winner of the
overall award for excellence.
We have implemented other
significant innovations and programs this year. Perth's first modular
apartment project was built in Cockburn Central in the member for Cockburn's
electorate. It is a six-storey apartment block. Seventy-seven homes were
delivered in only 10 days.
Mr
F.M. Logan interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Member for Cockburn —
Mr
M. McGowan interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Leader of the Opposition, I am on my feet. Member for Cockburn, I
call you to order for the first time.
Mr W.R. MARMION :
The 77 apartments were positioned in 10 days. My department has been taking the
lead in delivering the state's affordable housing strategy. We have
already reached 17 600 houses of our target of 20 000. We have to expand that
target to something a bit higher. We are also committed to develop 200 of our
existing sites and deliver 500 new affordable homes through our public housing
stock redevelopment project, thereby increasing the standard of our existing
social housing stock. Last week I had the privilege of participating in a
sod-turning ceremony to mark the commencement of the construction of the
development of 86 grade-entry-level homes in Queens Park. We have also delivered
two award-winning apartments in Perth's southern corridor, again in the
member for Cockburn's electorate, and commenced construction of two new
apartment buildings within the CBD, bringing affordability back into the CBD.
As part of our community housing growth program—another
program delivered by the department—this year we have delivered another
166 growth properties through the community housing sector. In May this year I opened
Access Housing's 38-unit development in Coolbellup. We have also
managed to produce 9 000 building lots through our joint venture partnership,
which the Treasurer just talked about. Earlier this month we celebrated the
opening of Annie's Landing—the eighth and final village in
Ellenbrook, which the member opposite will know. Twenty thousand residents are
already living in that joint venture development between the Department of
Housing and the private sector.
Earlier this month I was in South Hedland to open the
Mirnutharntu Maya employment-related accommodation facility in South Hedland,
something I am very proud of. I was able to tour the facility. It has 48 single
bedroom units and it provides accommodation for apprentices and trainees in
Port Hedland who do not have accommodation.
Finally, I would like to close with one of my favourites this
year—the Derby short-stay Aboriginal visitors centre, comprising 54 units
that delivers short-stay accommodation for the considerable number of visitors
who go into Derby for various reasons, such as health and family reasons. I am
very proud of what the department has managed to deliver in 2014. It has been a
busy year. I am looking forward to delivering even more in 2015.
