I refer to question on notice No. 4320 asked on 23 August 2016 to the Minister for Sport and Recreation regarding the economic contribution of off highway vehicle recreation, and ask: (a) how much of the recent trails funding announcements for 2015-16 specifically relates to the provision and planning of trails for four-wheel drive vehicles; (b) how many new four-wheel drive vehicles have been registered for private use and what is the gross value of these vehicles sold during the 2015-2016 financial year; (c) how effective is the planning for off-highway vehicle recreation when the economic and social contribution to Western Australia of this recreation spectrum remains unknown; (d) how does the Government currently target, prioritise and then resource the targeted initiatives for the four-wheel drive recreation spectrum in Western Australia; (e) how many dedicated four-wheel-drive recreational trails have been established and are currently available for Western Australian recreationalists; (f) does the current investigation into the establishment of a “trail bike” town in the South West include the cost of environmental management and remediation; and (g) does the Government intend establishing South West towns suitable for four-wheel drive trail recreation?

(a) In 2015/16, Lotterywest trails grant funding of $135,000 was allocated to the Pilbara Regional Council ($70,000 for trails strategic planning) and the Shire of Exmouth ($45,000 for trails master planning). These projects will include consideration of various trails including trails for four-wheel drive vehicles. (b) This question should be referred to the Minister for Transport. (c)-(g) The Department of Sport and Recreation has no jurisdiction over four-wheel drive recreation. The department is committed to promoting active recreation in all of its forms. It’s priorities are to plan and implement trails that facilitate active participation such as walk and mountain bike trails.
