I refer the minister to the government’s pre-election purchase of the Fremantle Kaleeya Hospital. When can the minister give an assurance to Samantha and Amy Leitch and the 250 young mums and their families who rely on this wonderful facility and who have been involved in waterproofing classes at the hydro pool at the hospital over the past 10 years that these lessons will continue to be held at family-friendly times on Monday to Friday afternoons? Mr J.A. McGINTY

The Department of Health met with Oceanic Waterbabies Pty Ltd last Friday and advised Oceanic Waterbabies, firstly that Fremantle Kaleeya Hospital is now a public hospital and that the hydrotherapy pool is needed for rehabilitation for public patients in the public hospital system for part of the day, but Kaleeya Hospital is prepared to compact that usage into the mornings and until 1.00 pm each day. Secondly, the department said that it would facilitate the use of the pool by Oceanic Waterbabies and East Fremantle Physiotherapy, the private users of the pool, everyday of the week from 1.00 pm onwards and every weekend. That is an extremely generous offer to businesses that wish to use a public facility for profit. I am more than happy to facilitate that in light of the previous arrangements. However, I emphasise that the interests of patients in our public hospitals must come first. For that reason, the pool will be available every morning on weekdays for the rehabilitation of public patients. The Department of Health is more than happy for it to be used outside those times, daily, from 1.00 pm onwards, provided an appropriate agreement can be reached between East Fremantle Physiotherapy and Oceanic Waterbabies, the two private sector users.
