I refer to the Department of Housing and Works sponsor design competition that resulted in the Broome filter house, which is to be the sustainable housing model for the Kimberley region. (1) What was the construction cost of this house? (2) How does this compare with the construction costs of more conventional houses of similar size and materials in Broome? (3) What are the predictions against which the department hopes to measure actual outcomes? (4) How many other homes of this type are proposed to be built in the next three years? Hon KATE DOUST

I thank the member for some notice of this question. I am advised - (1) $346 000. (2) Internal estimates indicate that the construction of a more conventional house of a similar size and with comparable finishes would currently cost between $250 000 and $300 000. (3) Monitoring of the house will occur through the Sustainable Energy Development Office - SEDO - to compare temperature fluctuations, energy consumption and water-saving features against other conventional housing in Broome. (4) Further sustainable housing models are under consideration in the Ellenbrook estate for the metropolitan area.
