(a - b) A review of the Dementia Action Plan 2003-2006 was conducted in April 2006 and a report summarising the outcomes was provided to the Minister for Health by the Chairperson of the West Australian Aged Care Advisory Council.
The report outlined a review of the State Plan objectives and outcomes achieved. The major achievements of the Dementia Action Plan included:
· Dissemination of 3900 Dementia Action Plans;
· Use of the Dementia Action Plan as a planning tool across the community care sector to identify funding opportunities for dementia;
· The Alzheimer's Association was funded to create public awareness about dementia and to develop and deliver training for hospital staff, family members and carers to appropriately supporting people with dementia;
· Respite care funding opportunities have been specifically targeted for dementia clients across the community care sector in the metropolitan and rural regions;
· The Alzheimer's Association has also been funded to enhance a dementia specific Centre Based Day Care in the Great Southern Region catering for four different groups of clients with dementia;
· Fulltime Neurological Nurse Specialist has been appointed for the South West region to address neurological conditions including dementia;
· Neurological Nurse Specialists have also been appointed for the Great Southern and Midwest regions to support people and their carers with neurological conditions including dementia;
· Support through the Chair of Geriatric Medicine to develop dementia specific initiatives for ATSI clients in the Kimberly region; and
· Funding to assist the Alzheimer's Association in the development of a Centre of Excellence for Dementia Care at Curtin University. The Centre will focus on dementia research, education, training and care and include a respite centre for carers and people with dementia.
(c - e) The National Dementia Working Group is currently developing a process for evaluating the National Framework for Action on Dementia 2006 - 2010. This evaluation process has not yet been completed. Once this evaluation process has been finalised, WA Health will undertake an assessment of the National Framework for Action on Dementia 2006-2010.
