NATIONAL ANZAC CENTRE — TRIPADVISOR AWARD
668. Dr G.G. JACOBS to the Minister for
Tourism:
I understand that the National Anzac
Centre in Albany recently received a top award from TripAdvisor. Can the
minister please update the house?

Yes, and I thank the member for the
question.
Ms
M.M. Quirk interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : I think Western Australians are proud of the National Anzac
Centre; it is a pity you are not.
Ms
M.M. Quirk interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you, member for Girraween.
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : The TripAdvisor website—TripAdvisor being the
national planning and booking site —
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : That is enough!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : It is an amazing attitude!
People
use that site and vote on what destinations they find most attractive and most
popular, and in the category for museums the National Anzac Centre was voted
number one in Australia. To put that in context, second place went to the
National Gallery of Victoria and third place went to Melbourne Museum, so that
is pretty heavy competition.
Since
it was opened in late 2014, the National Anzac Centre has had just under 140 000
visitors. It has been an outstanding success and, as members are aware, it was
jointly funded by the commonwealth government and the Western Australian
government and was opened on the 100 th anniversary of the departure
of the first Anzac convoy from Albany to Egypt, on to Gallipoli and then to the
Western Front. I think it was particularly appropriate to have both the
Australian and the New Zealand Prime Ministers present to take part in the
opening, and I am delighted that it has proved to be so successful. For members
who may not have been there, I recommend they go when they get the opportunity.
There are 30 accounts of the stories of individual Anzacs and two accounts of
enemy combatants—Turkish soldiers at Gallipoli, I assume. It is a very
modern, very interpretive and spectacular facility at a spectacular location.
Congratulations to those who designed it and put it together and to those who
manage it. It is a very important attraction for Western Australia and
particularly for Albany.
