INTEGRATED SERVICE CENTRES — KOONDOOLA AND PARKWOOD
I refer to the integrated service centres in Koondoola Primary School and Parkwood, which provide clinical support, family assistance, trauma counselling and community support for the children of newly arrived migrant families. As the minister is aware, many of these children come from war-torn countries and need assistance to overcome significant trauma and integrate into our community. I note that there is no continuation of funding in the budget for the integrated service centres in Koondoola and Parkwood. Can the minister advise whether the centres will be funded past 31 October 2009? Mr G.M. CASTRILLI

I thank the member for her question. The state government is totally committed to ensuring that humanitarian entrants receive settlement assistance. The integrated service centres program was a pilot program, as the member knows, and funding must be considered in the context of existing settlement services. The budget was $897 000 for both those centres. Up to 30 June last year, I think the client numbers for both Koondoola and Parkwood were about 119. As the member knows, the savings that have been made have enabled that program to be extended to 31 October this year. Therefore, that program will operate until that time. I visited the Parkwood Primary — Mr J.N. Hyde : Answer the question. We know all this. Mr G.M. CASTRILLI : Why does the member not just listen for a change? The SPEAKER : The member for Perth did not ask the question. I know that he is very interested in it. There will be other opportunities — Mr J.N. Hyde : I wrote it. The SPEAKER : The member may have written it, but he is not writing the answer. Mr G.M. CASTRILLI : The member might know that I visited the Parkwood centre on 10 February, along with another member, the member for Riverton. The Minister for Education also — Mr E.S. Ripper interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, Leader of the Opposition! Mr G.M. CASTRILLI : — went there on 5 March. I can tell the house that the Minister for Education and I are investigating funding options for the continuation of that program.
