Through the OneLife Suicide Prevention Small Grants and Training funding rounds, the following projects were funded during 2014-15:
· Nannup Community Resource Centre - Presentation on bullying and cyberbullying to 90 students from six South West schools and 60 parents. $4,475.00;
· Shire of Augusta Margaret River - Delivery of SafeTALK suicide prevention training at the Margaret River Skate, Art and Music (MR SAM) event workshops. $3,539.70;
· Lamp Inc. - a six week program that aims to develop resilience and enhance mental health and connectedness with Indigenous Australian Culture. $9,979.60;
· Goomburrup Aboriginal Corporation - Indigenous youth camps for high school students (aged 13 to 17) during the school holidays. Also run community workshops (for 15 years and over) covering a range of topics including the effects of alcohol and drugs, the risk factors for suicide, the signs to look for and where to access help and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. $9,475;
· Goomburrup Aboriginal Corporation (auspicing body for Melody's Life Rhythms) - provide Deal with Grief, Loss, Trauma and Intentional Self Harm training to frontline responders. $10,000.00;
· Lamp Inc. - Suicide prevention leadership project for local high school students in Margaret River, which aims to develop resilience, enhance mental health, connectedness with Indigenous Australian culture. $9,971.00;
· Goomburrup Aboriginal Corporation (auspicing body for Melody's Life Rhythms) - SafeTALK training. $10,000.00;
· Goomburrup Aboriginal Corporation (auspicing body for Melody's Life Rhythms) - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) train the trainer. $9,000.00; and
· Goomburrup Aboriginal Corporation (auspicing body for Melody's Life Rhythms) - SafeTALK training. $7,900.00.
In 2014/15, the Mental Health Commission (MHC) has a one-year grant agreement with Youth Focus involved in the School Suicide Response Project, valued at $550,000. Youth Focus has a regional office located in Bunbury and the following South West Region schools benefit from the Youth Focus onsite counselling services:
1. Manjimup SHS;
2. Margaret River SHS;
3. Cape Naturalist SHS;
4. Bridgetown SHS;
5. Newton Moore SHS;
6. Dallyellup College;
7. Bunbury SHS (Youth Focus and SPOT);
8. Donnybrook SHS;
9. Harvey SHS;
10. Collie SHS (Youth Focus and SPOT);
11. Eaton SHS;
12. Australind SHS; and
13. Busselton SHS.
As at January 2015, 12 South West high schools have commenced the Year 9 School Mental Health Awareness Program in Term 1 2015. The program is one of Youth Focus' flagship training programs that aims to improve mental health literacy across all levels within the school community, including the ability to recognise signs of mental distress in themselves and others, and confidence to act on those signs.
