I refer to the ABC online report by Jeff Waters, “Ill patients forced to camp near hospital”, which appeared on the ABC website on 15 August 2011. (1) Is the minister aware of dialysis and other seriously ill patients living in campsites with no access to water, food or sanitation whilst waiting for treatment at the nearby hospital in Port Hedland? (2) If no to (1), why not? (3) If yes to (1), can the minister provide details of how many patients, carers, escorts and family members are at the campsite? (4) If no to (3), why not? (5) If yes to (3), can the minister provide details of how he obtained the information of how many patients, carers, escorts and family members there are at the campsite? (6) If no to (4), why not? (7) If yes to (1), has the minister put in place any measures to rectify the situation for these patients? (8) If no to (6), why not? (9) If yes to (6), will the minister please provide full details of these measures, including implementation times? Hon HELEN MORTON

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) Yes. (2) Not applicable. (3) Two patients, and the partner of a third patient, are currently at the campsite undergoing dialysis at Hedland Health Campus, and are currently awaiting housing assistance. A social worker from the Western Australian Country Health Service Pilbara has been working with the Department of Housing to identify what options are available for these people. (4) Not applicable. (5) The information the minister has provided has been volunteered to the local health service staff by the patients in the course of the treatment. As with all health services provided as part of the treatment and care of any patient, if additional support is asked for or noted to be required, the individual patient’s details are given to the social worker so that the social worker can act as an advocate on behalf of the patient in accessing services from other agencies. In these particular persons’ situations, it is accessing services from the Department of Housing. (6) Not applicable. (7)&(9) The question of additional measures in terms of securing housing should be directed to the Minister for Housing. The service the Hedland Health Campus provides is access to the Hedland Health Campus hostel at a fee of $35 a night, which has been offered and declined. The Bloodwood Tree also offers accommodation for $20 to $25 a night. (8) Not applicable.
