MINISTER FOR POLICE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES - STAFF SUPERANNUATION PAYMENTS
I refer the Premier to the failure of the Minister for Police and Emergency Services as a former business owner to make timely superannuation payments to his employees as required by law. Has the Premier inquired about, firstly, the total amount of superannuation that was not paid to the police minister’s former employees, secondly, the number of employees who were not paid their superannuation and, thirdly, the period over which the non-payment occurred; and, if so, can the Premier provide the answers to the house, and, if not, why not? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

I suppose the Deputy Leader of the Opposition would have to get marks for audacity; that is, for being audacious enough to ask a question in the context of the discussion about him. The commentary that is being made about the member is being made not by members on this side of Parliament, but by those on his side of Parliament. It is very interesting. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Mr A.J. CARPENTER : I will leave it at that. I think that the description of and the commentary about the Deputy Leader of the Opposition by members on his side of Parliament says enough. I have full confidence in the police minister. The matters that were under discussion several weeks ago are, I understand, now resolved. Mr M.W. Trenorden : Rubbish! Mr A.J. CARPENTER : They are resolved. It was a difficult matter. It was a matter that should not have occurred. I think it is a salutary lesson for all members in this place who are still trying to run a small business, especially if they take on a senior role, which obviously consumes the vast majority of their time - in fact, it should consume all their time - that they can fall into these difficulties. I do not believe for one moment that the police minister acted wilfully or dishonestly. If I did believe that, the whole scenario would be different. I do not believe that. The Minister for Police and Emergency Services has provided an explanation to the house; indeed, I think he has provided several. He has answered questions on the matter, I think, on several occasions. The matter has been rectified, as I understand it.
