NORTHLINK
WA — HAMPTON PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL — UNDERPASS
626. Mr D.J. KELLY to the
Minister for Transport:
I refer the minister to yesterday's protest by over
100 parents and students from Hampton Park Primary School who are concerned
that they will not have safe access to their school because of the closure of
an underpass as part of the NorthLink project.
(1) Will the
minister apologise to those parents and students for dismissing their concerns
as, I quote, ''just another stunt'', when they have been making
their concerns clear for months through both the school board and the parents
and citizens association?
(2) Can the
minister now detail exactly what access families east of Tonkin Highway will
have to the school once the NorthLink project has been completed?

It is amazing! I say that opposition members' questions are scripted
for them and I think that just proves it. I sat there going, ''Far out,
I'll just read out what I just spoke about when I answered the question
from the member for Morley.''
When I was referring to the
political stunt, I was not referring to what the parents were saying about
Hampton Park Primary School. I was referring to the Leader of the Opposition
and him running out to the press, and I am referring to the activities that the
member for Bassendean is undertaking when he has no idea about what is going
on. That is what I am referring to as a political stunt. The member for Bassendean
wrote a letter to me that was received on my desk yesterday —
Mr D.J. Kelly interjected.
Mr D.C. NALDER : Mr
Speaker, he writes a letter to me —
Mr D.J. Kelly interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Bassendean, you have asked a question; let the minister answer!
Mr D.C. NALDER :
The member for Bassendean wrote a letter to me and I received it yesterday, but
opposition members were already out in front of the cameras winding up parents.
I just sit there going —
Mr P. Papalia : You
are misleading!
Mr D.C. NALDER : It
is misleading, yet the member for Morley has been aware of this issue. He has
been working with the P&C and the headmaster, and communicating directly
with me. As I said, last week I assured the member for Bassendean that we were
going to undertake certain things. I can confirm, and I will confirm again as
confirmed to the member for Morley, that we will ensure that the current
underpass will remain and that a second one will be built in around 12 to 18
months, and that there will be improved access to the local road network so
that cars can get in at a Kiss 'n' Ride drop-off area. We will
be building a new Kiss 'n' Ride facility at the school, and we
will provide additional car parking bays at the school. That is what I have
just said, yet I am being asked that question. I do not know whether the member
for Bassendean was not listening. Perhaps he needs to listen a little bit.
Mr D.J. Kelly interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Bassendean!
Mr D.C. NALDER : I
am answering the question. I just answered a question from the member for
Morley 10 minutes ago about these exact things that we are undertaking, so I
have just announced it again and I am really pleased that the member for
Bassendean is hearing it again.
