the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Transport:
I refer to the
ongoing streetlight outages across the Perth metropolitan area and surrounding
regions.
(1) What actions is Main Roads taking, in
collaboration with WA police and the scrap metal industry, to address the theft
of copper cabling from streetlighting infrastructure?
(2) How many individuals have been identified,
charged and prosecuted in relation to copper cable theft from streetlighting
infrastructure this year to date?
(3) What is the estimated cost of repairs and
replacements resulting from copper theft, including the installation of lockable
pits, this year to date?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. I provide the following
answer on behalf of the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(3) Main Roads WA is working closely
with WA police to develop and implement strategies to combat cable theft,
including targeted CCTV deployments, notification of theft hotspots, regular
reporting of all cable theft incidents, and design and specification changes
aimed at reducing the scrap value of materials. Any questions pertaining to
criminal investigations should be referred to the Minister for Police.
