MR WARD — CORONER’S REPORT AND OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC PROSECUTIONS
(1) Arising out of the death in custody of Mr Ward, has the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions considered whether charges will be laid against — (a) either of the police officers involved; (b) the justice of the peace; (c) any officer of the Department of Corrective Services; (d) any office bearer of G4S; or (e) either of the G4S staff involved? (2) If no to (1), why not? (3) If yes to (1) — (a) if a decision has been made, what is the outcome; (b) if a decision has not yet been made, how much longer is it likely to be before a decision is made? Hon MICHAEL MISCHIN

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1)–(3) The report from the coroner required the Director of Public Prosecutions to consider whether any indictable offence was committed in connection with the death of the late Mr Ward. The Director of Public Prosecutions has considered that request in respect of all persons who may have relevantly been involved with the matter. The Director of Public Prosecutions requested, and did receive, further material since that initial report. The director will determine within the next fortnight whether any criminal charge should be preferred against any person.
