the Minister for Transport:
I have a
supplementary question. Why is it that bicycles in this state face stricter
lighting standards than trains, the largest vehicles on land?

I just explained
that trials are underway and, as I just explained, rail safety is governed by a
national rail safety regulator. We will oversee the outcome of the trials and
continue to put the issue on the national agenda. I am very proud of the work
that we have been doing across many years to improve rail safety. When the
National Party was in government, it did nothing on this issue. I do not
remember it ever raising this issue, let alone spending any money to fix it.
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
Ms Rita Saffioti: Do not politicise this issue.
Mr Lachlan Hunter: We're not.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt, you have
asked the question. The minister is responding.
Ms Rita Saffioti: If that member wants to politicise
it like this, I say: Why, in eight and a half years, did the former Liberal–National
government not fix those regional roads? Why did it sell off—
Mr Lachlan Hunter interjected.
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt!
Ms Rita Saffioti: Why did it sell off the regional rail
freight network? Why do members opposite say that royalties for regions money should
not be spent on regional roads? We are proud of our record of spending a record
amount on regional road safety and improving road and rail safety across the
state.
