(1) Yes (2) Local governments are responsible for setting and recovering legally imposed rates and charges. As Minister for Local Government and Regional Development, I do not have the legislative power to direct councils to provide rate relief to property owners affected by the finance brokers’ scandal. The Government understands that several local governments have indicated that they are willing to enter into agreements with affected property owners for the repayment of rates over time. At least one (the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder) has resolved to write off part of the interest owing on affected property. The Government would encourage all local governments to give sympathetic consideration to approaches from investors suffering financial hardship on account of failed mortgage broker schemes.
