As a supplementary question, does the minister agree with the finding of the select committee report that the gap between the city and country prices has widened since the coalition Government abolished price controls in 1993? Mr SHAVE

AnswerView source ↗

In some locations that may be correct. The major reason that the price of fuel has risen so dramatically has been - Dr Gallop: That was not my question, minister; answer the question. Mr SHAVE: I will answer the question. If the Leader of the Opposition wants to answer the question for me, he should come over here and answer it for me. Dr Gallop: Give us a few months and we will do it. Mr SHAVE: The Leader of the Opposition should not hold his breath. The reason that fuel prices have dramatically escalated is that the price of crude oil has tripled in round figures over that period. In February and March this year, before the latest round of price increases occurred, I was concerned. That committee has reported and the Government will make the appropriate decisions on that report.
