SYNERGY — COAL IMPORTS
22. Hon
JAMES HAYWARD to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Energy:
I refer to coal being shipped from
New South Wales to Collie.
(1) Approximately
how many tonnes of CO 2 are emitted during the
transportation of 100 000 tonnes of coal from NSW to Collie?
(2) Will the WA government offset the additional
carbon pollution incurred from coal transport by purchasing carbon
credits?
(3) Is the
quality and grade of the coal imported from NSW identical to the coal usually
used in WA power stations?
(4) If no to (3), will any plant or process
adjustments need to be made to utilise NSW coal in WA power stations?

and the associated emissions are the responsibility of Yancoal.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) As has been
highlighted by the Minister for Energy in Parliament and in the media on many
occasions, the imported coal has a higher ash content than locally supplied
coal.
(4) No.
