As well as the formal conservation reserve system on public land, the Government supports initiatives on private land that protect conservation values on those lands. This will be pursued progressively through means such as those listed in the RFA attachment 6 titled “Protection and management of forests on private land”, including voluntary convenants and management agreements.

Under its “Protecting our old-growth forests” policy, the Government is committed to the full protection of all our remaining old-growth and high conservation value forests. The Government will create 30 new national parks, including the 12 new national parks promised under the Regional Forest Agreement. In total the Government plans to create approximately 200,000 hectares of new reserves in our south-west forests, in addition to the 150,000 hectares proposed under the RFA.
