Will the minister explain to the House the smarter schools strategy that I had the pleasure of witnessing him launch at Beckenham Primary School this morning? Mr CARPENTER

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Roleystone for the question and for his very positive attitude towards education in all schools in his electorate. He is a model member and makes a very good contribution to the Parliament. We launched the smarter schools program this morning at Beckenham Primary School in the member’s electorate. For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with it, Beckenham Primary School is a fabulous little school. It has a wonderful environment and is strongly led by the principal. It has great staff. Today I witnessed one of the best productions I have ever seen at a primary school assembly. The production was put on for the launch of the program. Today is public education day. It is a timely day on which to announce an initiative for government schools and public education. Government schools need all the support they can get from not only all members of Parliament, but also the Government as a whole. The Government is doing a great deal of work to raise the profile, status and standards of public education in Western Australia and to ensure that when children go to schools in this State they receive an education that is equal to any education that any student is getting anywhere in the world, not just in Australia. There is no reason that it cannot be done. This morning for the smarter schools program, we announced additional sums of $11 million for primary school upgrades, $5 million for administration upgrades, $3 million for the air-cooling scheme that is being unrolled, $3 million for schools of the air, $1 million for school security fencing, $1 million for school security alarms and an additional $1 million for arts and crafts rooms. The Government is committed to providing brilliant educational environments. This comes on top of 350 additional primary school teachers who will begin work on the first day of school next year and an additional 40 experts in numeracy and literacy. The Government will be providing finance next year, over and above the quota for this year, for 400 extra teachers for years 1 to 3 in government schools in Western Australia. No other Government has done anything like it in the history of Western Australia. The Government will invest $28 million in behaviour management and discipline for years 8 and 9 by investing $7 million each year over four years. Members are seeing from this Government a sensible, structured plan for the improvement of government schools in Western Australia. The Government has not neglected and will not neglect the non-government sector. Yesterday morning I was at the Catholic Education Office to help it launch its literacy and numeracy program aimed at children in the Kimberley. It is a brilliant little program. The Government is deeply involved in that. Students from the Frederick Irwin Anglican School of Mandurah are in the public gallery today. I welcome them to Parliament House. Public education day is a wonderful day on which to showcase the best things that we are doing in government schools. It is important for everyone in the community to know that we are committed to upgrading schools and making schools smarter. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Members! Mr Bradshaw: He is a hypocrite. Withdrawal of Remark The SPEAKER: I think to indicate a person is a hypocrite is unparliamentary. I suggest that the member withdraw the comment. Mr BRADSHAW: I will reluctantly withdraw it. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: The member knows the rules. Mr BRADSHAW: I will withdraw those comments. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER: Members! I thank the member for Moore for his statement, but we must get on with question time. Questions without Notice Resumed Mr CARPENTER: It is good to see that the youth ticket in the Opposition is prepared to admit when it has made a mistake. Yesterday in a better show of bipartisanship, I had the pleasure of being at the Eastern Goldfields Senior High School with the members for Eyre and Kalgoorlie. It was a fantastic day, especially the trip back. Everybody involved in developing public educational facilities in the goldfields to world-class standards deserves to be congratulated. Nothing is more important than the delivery of education by the State Government in Western Australia. This Government’s performance in education outshines the previous Government’s performance.
