QuestionView source ↗
(1) Has the government received any advice from Woodside, the North West Shelf Joint venture, or from any other source to indicate when to expect a drop-off in gas production from the North West Shelf Joint Venture project which will impact upon the operation of the current number of processing trains at the Burrup?
(2) Is North West Shelf gas production currently projected to drop to the point where, in 2020, it will be necessary to take two of the trains currently operational at the Burrup, out of production; and
(a) if yes, does this scenario create the opportunity for the State Government to protect the interests and investment of the taxpayers of Western Australia at the Burrup, by encouraging the various corporations involved in this gas industry to co-operate so that any excess capacity is utilised by other gas producers; and
(i) if not, why not?

Department of State Development advises:
(1) Under the provisions of the North West Gas Development (Woodside) Agreement Act 1979, Woodside Energy Ltd (Woodside), on behalf of the North West Shelf Venture is required to provide the Minister for State Development an annual status of the booked gas reserves volumes. In addition, Woodside also presents an annual reserves and market update to the Department of State Development.
From data provided, it is the general expectation that reserves from current developments will start to gradually decline from 2015 onwards as that resource is utilised. This does not take into account ongoing exploration and development opportunities which, in turn, will provide additional reserves requiring the operation of the processing plant at the Burrup.
(2) No. There has been no direct advice from the North West Shelf Venture in relation to reducing the number of operational trains in 2020.
(a-ai) Not applicable.
