I thank Hon John Fischer for some notice of the question. (1) The Department of Agriculture has leased the Parkeston stockyards since they were sold to Australia Southern Railway Pty Ltd by the federal Government. When the planned new quarantine inspection yards to be located at south Boulder are operational, the Parkeston stockyards will no longer be used as a quarantine inspection yard. (2) The Parkeston yard is owned by Australia Southern Railway and has been operated by the Department of Agriculture on a three-month-lease basis. The yards require upgrading. However, without security of tenure, the department could not invest in upgrading the yards to the required standard. (3) It is estimated that the new yards at south Boulder will cost approximately $1 million to build. (4) No. The south Boulder stockyards will be located about 10 kilometres from the Parkeston stockyards. That is about five minutes shorter travel time for stock trucks entering Western Australia via the Eyre Highway and five minutes longer for trucks entering via the central desert highway.
