Mr. Catania questions the basis of a new thoroughbred co-director appointment to the Racing and Wagering WA board, highlighting that the director only received nominations from three of eight eligible industry bodies. The Minister defends the appointment based on the Director General's investigation showing those three bodies represented 77% of industry players.

RACING AND WAGERING
WESTERN AUSTRALIA — THOROUGHBRED CO-DIRECTOR
531. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Minister for Racing and Gaming:
I refer to the appointment of a new
thoroughbred co-director to the Racing and Wagering Western Australia board. On
what basis was this appointment made, given that the new director received
nomination from only three of the eight eligible industry bodies?
Ms M.M. Quirk interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Girrawheen, I call you to order for the first time.

I thank the member for the question.
As the member is no doubt aware—in fact, he referred to it in his
question—there was no unified response from the code. As a consequence,
the director general investigated which of the eligible bodies represented the
most players in the industry and found that 77 per cent of the people were
represented by three of the eligible bodies. He took their nomination and I took
his advice.
