URANIUM MINING - POLICY CHANGE
I refer to an article in Mining News of 19 March entitled “Uranium ban to be lifted in 3 years: Paladin”, in which Paladin Resources concludes that uranium mining in Western Australia is set to become a reality in the next three years and that there will be a possible policy change as soon as next month. (1) Is the Premier aware of any pressure within the Australian Labor Party to change policy in Western Australia to allow for uranium mining in Western Australia? (2) Does the government still stand by its no uranium mining policy? (3) Is there to be a change in WA’s ALP policy on uranium mining before the next state election? (4) Will the Premier give a commitment, if re-elected, to maintain the current no uranium mining policy beyond the next state election? The PRESIDENT : Leader of the House, I note that some parts of the question are not relevant to the Premier’s responsibilities. Hon KIM CHANCE

Thank you, Mr President; that thought occurred to me when I heard the question, but unfortunately not when I first okayed the answer. I think I can answer the first three parts of the question. (1) No. (2) Yes. (3) No. I believe the fourth part of the question exceeds the capacity that the Premier has because it would be a decision of the Australian Labor Party’s conference. It is a policy position. Although the Premier has provided an answer, I will need to go back to the Premier and speak to him about whether that is exactly what he intended.
