DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FACILITY, HILLARYS BOAT HARBOUR
I refer to the minister’s repeated assurances in this House that no decision has been made to locate the planned Department of Fisheries research and education facility at Hillarys Boat Harbour and ask - (1) Is the minister aware that a tender was advertised by the Department of Housing and Works on behalf of the Department of Fisheries? (2) Is the minister aware that this tender, which has now been withdrawn, was due to close on 7 May before the promised review of parking facilities at the harbour was even completed? Ms MacTIERNAN

I have gone through this issue ad nauseam with the member. As he well knows, planning approval was given by the previous Government, of which he was a cabinet member, to locating that Department of Fisheries facility at Hillarys Boat Harbour. This Government said it would review the matter, and the review has been completed. The report was shown to the leaseholders at the Hillarys marina last Monday and an extensive briefing was provided over a number of hours. We asked the leaseholders to get back to us by the end of the week if they were not happy with the findings of the review. The review found that the location of the facility would enhance the availability of parking and certainly not be to its detriment. I am meeting this afternoon with people from the Department of Planning and Infrastructure and later this evening with people from fisheries to go through the detail. I understand that the vast majority of leaseholders have no concerns. However, one leaseholder, the Wyllie Group Pty Ltd, is interested in developing a facility on the site, which may be incompatible with the fisheries building. We understand that the previous Government knew about this matter and, like us, it had assessed that the proposed development by the Wyllie Group may not be in keeping with the long-term planning of the area. This Government has honoured its commitment to undertake the review, which is now complete. The review has been put to the leaseholders and I understand that the leaseholders are very happy with its findings.
