BUSHFIRE MITIGATION
707. Mr M. HUGHES to the Minister for Emergency Services:
Can
the minister update the house on how the McGowan Labor government is building
on the success of last year's bushfire mitigation summit and
continuing to work with key stakeholders in its fight to reduce the risk of
bushfire?

I thank the member for Kalamunda and
acknowledge the great work he does with volunteers in his electorate in the
bush fire brigades, the volunteer fire and rescue service and the State Emergency
Service. Members would remember that last year we held the bushfire mitigation
summit in Mandurah. It was a very successful event.
Mr D.T. Redman : There were 15
politicians there.
Mr F.M. LOGAN : It was widely
represented, with a significant number of politicians there, including the
member for Warren–Blackwood, who was a team leader—he was on
the whiteboard with a texta. He did a great job! It was a very successful
summit. That summit has led to the creation of the Rural Fire Division and the
mitigation package that we have not only announced, but also, as of the
question yesterday, indicated how it will be rolled out across Western Australia.
Following on from that bushfire mitigation summit, I promised that another
forum would be held within the next year. That will occur on 4 October at the
Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre. It will be slightly different from last year's
summit. This year we will have 100 participants from bush fire brigades,
volunteer associations, government agencies and regional advocacy groups to
deal with the technical aspects of bush firefighting and mitigation, as opposed
to the broad-ranging policy issues we were dealing with in the summit last
year. I believe that the work of those people who will be attending that forum
will be extremely worthwhile, particularly as one part of the forum will deal
with input into the new Bushfire Centre of Excellence—what it should
be, how it should work and the types of training that should occur there. I am
looking forward to the summit. I wish all participants the very best. I hope
they can give our government another significant input into our policymaking
and in making our community safe.
