Heritage Council of WA advises:
(1) In June 2002 at which time the place was considered to be outside the scope of the
Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990
(the Act).
(2) In May 2005 it was included in the Heritage Council's assessment program on advice from State Solicitor's Office (SSO) that the Dampier Archipelago was a place covered by the Act. Assessment was not commenced at this time as the Dampier Archipelago had already been nominated to the National Heritage List and it was expected that the Australian Heritage Council would be assessing the place.
(3) Assessment commenced in July 2006.

(6) Members of the Heritage Council, together with Heritage Council Officers and others, visited the site in the course of the Heritage Council's regular monthly meeting. This is in accordance with the Heritage Council's policy of having at least one meeting per year in a regional centre.

(12) Since July 2006 the assessment of Dampier Archipelago has been considered 6 times by the Heritage Council and its Committees. The dates on which the assessment was considered by the Heritage Council are 14 July 2006; 13 October 2006; 17 November 2006 and 31 August 2007. The Heritage Council's Register Committee also considered the assessment at its meetings of 28 July 2006 and 25 August 2006.
(13) Yes. The Minister has been informed of the assessment processes as they have gone forward.

(15) The Minister's view is that State Listing under the Heritage of Western Australia Act (1990) is not required. The Heritage Council does not normally deal with sites of Indigenous significance. These have their own statutory protection under the Aboriginal Heritage Act (1972).
