INDIGENOUS JOBS FORUM
I acknowledge the students and staff from St Norbert College, which is in my electorate, who are in the public gallery. Welcome! Will the Premier advise the house about the response to the Indigenous jobs forum that will be held tomorrow? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for the question. Tomorrow an Indigenous jobs forum will be held in Perth. The objective of the forum is simple: we want to find as many ways as we possibly can to engage more Aboriginal people in employment around Western Australia. We have invited employers from the full range of the economic spectrum. We have invited the big employers - Woodside, BHP and Rio Tinto. John Bolty will be there. Richard Goyder from Wesfarmers will also be attending. We have invited representatives from the big end of town, from middle-sized businesses and from small businesses and we have also invited self-employed people. Hopefully they will provide us with some way forward and with their particular plans, such as they may have, to engage more Aboriginal people. It has been my belief for a very long time that a government can spend decades trying to reorganise government or it can get on and govern. The best thing that we can do is to get the private sector to provide Indigenous people in this state with employment, particularly at a time when we are considering importing thousands of workers from other countries. Mr P.D. Omodei : Why didn’t you invite the opposition? Mr A.J. CARPENTER : Which opposition? Should I have invited Noel Crichton-Browne or Brian Burke? Are they the opposition, because the opposition has no leadership? If the opposition wants to have a forum along similar lines, it should have one. Kevin Rudd ran one when the Labor Party was in opposition. Several members interjected. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : It is so sad to see the complete rabble that opposition has descended into. The objective is to bring employers, trainers, educators and people in those fields together with Aboriginal people to find ways to expand success and to engage Aboriginal people. It will not be - it was never meant to be - a forum for political speeches or a forum that will allow hack politicians to make a point. It is not a forum for politicians; it was never intended to be. To that end, I say in advance - I sincerely regret this situation; I hope people understand - that I will not be able to attend the forum. Mr C.J. Barnett : Okay. We know why. Mr A.J. CARPENTER : I thank the member for Cottesloe. Matt Price was a very close friend of mine. His funeral is being held tomorrow morning and I will not miss it. I regret very much, obviously, that I will not be able to attend the forum. I will be attending Matt Price’s funeral, as will hundreds of other people. I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the forum, because I have worked hard to bring it together. I will be represented at the forum by the Deputy Premier. To those people whom I have worked on to get to the forum, I apologise in advance for my non-attendance. I am sure that any decent person would understand why.
