metropolitan railways — transit guards
(1) Are all regular metropolitan passenger train services running between the hours of 10.00 pm and 3.00 am accompanied by transit guards? (2) If not, which of these services do not have transit guards and what is the policy that determines which of these services have transit guards and which do not? Hon SIMON O’BRIEN

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) No. (2) On Sunday to Thursday nights, Transperth ensures that transit officers are aboard all of the midnight—that is, the last—services out of Perth. On Friday and Saturday nights, as a minimum, transit officers are aboard the last two services out of Perth—the 1.00 am and 2.00 am services. Transperth has, and continues to rely on, a directive from the previous government to put transit guards on all trains running after 7.00 pm. This directive was an election commitment from Labor in 2001. The Public Transport Authority has advised that it is unlikely that this commitment was ever achieved by the previous government due to understaffing. Since the election of the Liberal-National government in September 2008, the PTA has added a number of transit guards and expects this understaffing to significantly ease around July 2009. I would like to assure the house that this government will pursue every possible measure to ensure the safety of the travelling public.
