Mr. Love questions the adequacy of the government's road safety initiatives, suggesting a paint job on police cars and $32 million over four years is insufficient given the road trauma toll. The Premier defends the government's investment in road upgrades, citing billions spent on widening and hardening shoulders and installing audible edging.

ROAD SAFETY
640. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
I
have a supplementary question. Given the devastating toll that road trauma is
taking on people such as those grieving families you spoke to, is a paint
job on police cars and a meagre $32 million over four years really the best
that the government can offer?

AnswerView source ↗

I understand that our initial road
upgrades—that is the widening and hardening of shoulders and the
installation of audible edging—is a program that costs in the billions.
In fact, I was up in the Pilbara just recently where we talked about another
extensive piece of the Nullagine highway, where we are undertaking further
upgrades, widening and firming shoulders and installing audible edging. That is
widely welcomed by the community and plays such an important role in making our
roads safer.
The announcement that we made
following the round table is another good next step, and we will continue to do
more, because we will always do what is right for WA.
