WILLETTON SPORTS CLUB
I refer to the Willetton Sports Club, which is now in liquidation leaving thousands of members of local sports clubs without the facilities it provided. What steps has the minister taken to work with the City of Canning to ensure any disruption as a result of the liquidation is minimised and that sporting and community groups in the area can access the centre as soon as possible? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question, which was given last Thursday, so some of the timing relates to that occasion. The minister’s department has been liaising with the City of Canning since this issue came to light in September. The minister is aware that the council had a special general meeting last night—I presume that was last Wednesday. He was told this week—this is last week—that although the Willetton Sports Club is insolvent and has handed the keys back to the city, individual clubs will still be able to use the ovals, change rooms, toilets and lights, but not the social rooms. The government has been assured that all clubs will be able to access the community facilities that will enable them to train and play their games. Any community group wishing to hold functions at the club can apply for an occasional liquor licence, which some are already doing.
