the minister representing the Minister for Corrective
Services:
I refer to the
recent Supreme Court case in which David Pye is facing charges pertaining to
his alleged orchestration of the assassination of gang boss Nick Martin.
(1) Is the minister aware of the comments made by
Justice Joseph McGrath that were critical of the department's decision-making?
(2) Is the minister aware of the cost to the state
of supervising, monitoring and transporting the accused while on bail for the

I thank the member
for some notice of the question. The following response has been provided to me
by the Minister for Corrective Services.
(1) Yes.
(2)–(4) No. The decision to grant bail is
made by the courts. Once bail is granted, the operational arrangements to
monitor and manage the accused person, including any associated costs, are the
responsibility of the Western Australia Police Force. These arrangements are
not within the portfolio responsibility of the Minister for Corrective
Services.
