There is no notice of the question. A series of surveys recently conducted by Western Australia’s peak independent housing organisation, Shelter WA, pointed to a worsening of housing affordability for homeless people in Western Australia. (1) Is the minister aware that the proportion of children aged under 14 years to the total number of homeless people has increased from 30 per cent in March 2002 to 45 per cent in February 2003? (2) Is the minister aware that children represent 60 per cent of all homeless indigenous people? (3) What is the minister doing to ensure that young people, and young indigenous people particularly, are provided with the basic requirements of a roof over their heads, especially as winter is coming on? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS

(1)-(3) Without agreeing to the preamble to the question in terms of statistics, as I have not had the opportunity to recently check the point made by the honourable member, the State Government has a comprehensive homeless strategy across a range of agencies. My predecessor in the housing and works portfolio, Hon Tom Stephens, should take great credit for that strategy. It is progressing well. Substantial funds have been allocated. The State entered a housing agreement last year with the Commonwealth. As a result, substantial funds will flow to ensure the best opportunities for housing for people who suffer disadvantage in Western Australia.
