The Department of Education's policy in relation to the resolution of equal employment opportunity (EEO) and diversity complaints provides for them to be addressed at the local level. Conciliation occurs in accordance with the principles of promptness, procedural fairness, confidentiality and choice. In accordance with the requirements of the Standing Committee on Records Management, confidential records are kept locally in a secure location for up to seven years after the complaint has been completed. Complainants may also choose to lodge their complaint outside the Department with agencies such as the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administrative Investigations (State Ombudsman), the Equal Opportunity Commissioner and the Police Department. Given the Department's policy for local resolution of complaints, central records identifying each complainant are not maintained. All formal complaints are addressed by the Equal Opportunity Commission.
