(a) how many of these six personnel have been recruited from outside of the Department of Agriculture and Food;
(b) what knowledge, skills, experience or formal training were essential prerequisites for being appointed into these new roles;
(c) has the Department identified any professional development programmes as essential for the new incumbents;
(d) what animal welfare training has been provided to the officers who have been recruited, who provided the training and is this training accredited by either State or Federal training authorities?

(1) Eight new positions have been created in the Livestock Compliance Unit within the Department of Agriculture. All positions were advertised externally. Seven of these positions have been filled from within the Department of Agriculture and Food WA.
(a) One.
(b) The recruitment process targeted individuals with the experience in animal welfare, livestock production, livestock identification, communication and the interpretation and application of relevant legislation and codes of practice.
(c) The Department is currently looking into appropriate professional development opportunities for staff in the unit. A number of LCU staff already have relevant qualifications, such as Diploma of Investigations or Certificate IV in Statutory Government Compliance.
(d) All recruited staff have undertaken on-line and face to face training in legislation, animal welfare assessment, euthanasia and compliance and evidence gathering in an animal welfare context. This training has been delivered by experienced DAFWA staff and an external consultant with significant experience in animal welfare prosecutions. All officers have also completed a low stress stock handling course.
