Green steel—Definition
1144. Hon Sophie McNeill to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Manufacturing:
I refer to the
Premier's announcement regarding expressions of interest for green steel projects.
(1) What is the government's definition of "low-emissions"
and how will it be applied to the green steel industry?
(2) What does the
government deem to be the appropriate amount of emissions for steel to be classified
as "green"?
(3) What does the government deem to be the
appropriate amount of fossil fuels use for both "green" and "low-emissions"
steel production respectively?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. On behalf of the Leader of the
House, I provide the following response provided by the Minister for Manufacturing.
(1)–(3) Green steel generally refers to
steel produced using low-carbon processes and/or recycled materials. The
government is in the process of developing an expression-of-interest process
regarding green steel, in addition to the green iron and steel action plan.
These work packages will consider the appropriate definitions as they apply to
the iron and steel industry.
