Fuel supply—Security
100. Mrs Magenta Marshall to the Premier:
I refer to the
unfolding conflict in the Middle East. Can the Premier update the house on how
this government is responding to the conflict, including any potential impacts
in Western Australia?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member
for the question, because we know that recent developments in the Middle East
are being closely monitored by our government. They represent a period of uncertainty;
they represent a period of upheaval. Last week I called a meeting of the Security
and Emergency Committee of Cabinet in response to the unfolding conflict in the
Middle East. I am receiving regular briefings on the conflict and the impacts
that it may have on Western Australia. My government is working closely with
the federal government, which is monitoring global supply chains and their
impact on fuel supplies in Australia.
I know that Western
Australians are concerned about the impacts of this war and how it may impact
the state, and one of those concerns is about the fuel prices that many Western
Australians have already felt at the bowser. While the Commonwealth is
responsible for fuel-supply monitoring and fuel reserves, our government is
closely monitoring the situation and preparing for any potential impacts here.
The most recent advice continues to be that there are no direct impacts to
contracted fuel supplies. Fuel continues to arrive in Australia in the quantity
and at the frequency that we would expect. I am aware that we are seeing
increased demand, with reports of temporary disruptions at some retailers. I
understand that this may create anxiety for families and for businesses.
Tomorrow, I will
bring together fuel suppliers and key industries that rely on a stable supply
of fuel to join me in a fuel security round table. I want to ensure that I am
receiving the latest information from businesses and industries impacted and
getting the insights that they have through their supply chains.
Representatives from the agriculture, resources, transport, freight and
logistics industries have been invited, as well as fuel suppliers. I want to
ensure that all Western Australians' needs are met as part of any response to a
future disruption. That is why I want to work closely with the industry. My
government will take these insights from industry with us as we continue to
engage with the federal government. We want to make sure that Western
Australians have the most competitive fuel prices possible, and that is the
reason why we are very proud of the FuelWatch system, which can be accessed
online, either on the website or through people's ServiceWA app. It is about
making sure that consumers are activated, informed and have the opportunity to
access the very cheapest fuels. We know that there is disruption and we know
that there are anxieties and concerns within the community today. My round
table tomorrow—I will be joined by the Deputy Premier; Minister for
Transport and the Minister for Energy and Decarbonisation—is about continuing to listen to the community to see how
we can continue to support them in relation to fuel supplies across the
state.
