(1) In 1997-98, the most recent financial year for which estimates are available, the total expenditure on hospital beddays related to alcohol and other drug treatment for the Norwest regions (Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne) was: - $3.7 million (this is based on aetiological fractions using Principal Diagnosis and first E code). - this was a 3-5% increase from expenditure in 1995. It would therefore be expected that by 2004-2005 there would be a significant increase on $3.7 million per financial year. (2) The Alcohol and Drug Policy Branch (Mental Health Division) is currently involved in Strategic Planning activities for the enhancement of alcohol and drug services in the regions. Current allocations for programs associated with implementation of the Health Department of WA Drug Strategy including increasing provision of detoxification services through general health services in the Norwest are: 2000/01 2001/02 2002/03 $85 000 $125 000 $60 000 Once planning is completed, it is anticipated that further funds will be allocated to this area. The Office of Aboriginal Health at the Health Department of WA currently funds a variety of programs related to alcohol and other drug problems. The WA Drug Abuse Strategy office currently funds a variety of programs related to rehabilitation and "sobering-up".
