ROYAL PERTH HOSPITAL - SALE OF LAND
I refer to rumours circulating around the Royal Perth Hospital that negotiations have taken place and an agreement has been signed with a leading Perth company regarding the future sale of a proportion of Royal Perth Hospital land. It has also been noted that despite the minister’s commitment to relocate the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and the King Edward Memorial Hospital to the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital site, there are no additional funds in the budget. (1) Is there any truth in the rumours regarding Royal Perth Hospital? (2) Is the minister committed to the relocation of Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and King Edward Memorial Hospital to the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital site; and, if so, when? (3) Is the minister planning to fund the relocation through the sale of Royal Perth Hospital land? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1) If the rumours are true, I have not heard them. I suspect I would have heard them if there had been any truth in the rumour relating to Royal Perth Hospital. I can say that the Department of Health would not have entered into any arrangement, or got close to entering into any arrangement, in the face of my very clear statement that we will not address the land issue until such time as the hospital is no longer needed. I think I can therefore safely debunk the rumour that the member has raised. (2) The plan that was announced some time ago for the relocation of Princess Margaret Hospital for Children and King Edward Memorial Hospital, which was to relocate Princess Margaret Hospital to the north block of Royal Perth Hospital, has received significant criticism and, as a result, we have gone back and consulted the clinicians, particularly at Princess Margaret Hospital. A decision remains to be made as to - Dr K.D. Hames : You said publicly that you supported it. Mr J.A. McGINTY : Sure, and I support the clinicians at Princess Margaret Hospital in their view. There are very significant financial implications in that decision, and no decision has been made on that issue to date, although I personally support it. Dr K.D. Hames : So when will you make that decision? Mr J.A. McGINTY : Some time in the future. I cannot be any more specific than that. (3) I think the final point in relation to the sale has been answered in (1). Dr K.D. Hames : So are you not planning to use land sales to fund the relocation of Princess Margaret Hospital or King Edward? Mr J.A. McGINTY : No, not at all; categorically no.
