I refer to the use of interpreter services for Aboriginal people of Torres Strait Island descent in criminal matters. (1) How many defendants of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island descent have requested interpreter services in criminal cases over the past 12 months? (2) In how many of these cases was an interpreter provided? (3) Does the Attorney General acknowledge that the inability to understand court proceedings is likely to have a major impact on a defendant? (4) Will the Attorney General ensure that interpreters are provided in all cases? (5) Will the Attorney General ensure that all judges receive Aboriginal cultural awareness training? Hon SUE ELLERY
