It is always difficult to follow on from a good speaker. Fortunately, I do not have that problem. Some notice of this question has been given. I refer the minister to the unprecedented escape of nine dangerous criminals from the Supreme Court last Thursday. (1) On that day, how many police officers were diverted from their normal duties to assist in the recapture of those escapees? (2) How many police officers continue to be diverted from their normal duties to continue the hunt for the escapees who are still on the run? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I thank the member for some notice of the question. The Police Service has advised me as follows - (1) Records available at this time indicate that approximately 75 police vehicles were recorded by the police communications centre as having varying degrees of involvement in the search and apprehension of the escapees. (2) The police prisons unit and other specialists squads are focused on the search. In addition, the major incident group and the regional operations group are on alert and ready to assist. I understand that Kensington detectives are involved in the incident that occurred last evening. An alert requiring a lookout to be kept for the escapees has been issued statewide. All police officers throughout the State have a responsibility as part of their operational duties to keep a lookout for and to apprehend the escapees. District resources continue to be focused on the Police Service’s usual operational duties.
