AnswerView source ↗
I thank the Leader of the Opposition for some notice of this question. The Minister Assisting the Minister for Water Resources has supplied the following answer - (1) The first two traditional water sources that the Water Corporation will develop subsequent to the 45 gigalitre desalination plant currently under construction are - a water trade with irrigators, to allow the corporation to access an increased share of existing surface water sources for public water supply; and the south west Yarragadee ground water scheme. (2) Water trading is expected to provide 17 gigalitres a year, subject to the finalisation of a trade agreement and regulatory approval. The south west Yarragadee ground water scheme is expected to provide 45 gigalitres a year, subject to investigations and regulatory approval. (3) Subject to the approvals mentioned above, it is expected that the water trade agreement will be signed in the third quarter of 2005, with piping of the irrigation schemes commencing in October 2005. Water from the permanent trade will become available progressively from 2006, with the full 17 gigalitres available from 2008. The south west Yarragadee ground water scheme is planned for development to provide water for the summer of 2009-10. Point of Order Hon NORMAN MOORE : I submitted, presumably to the government, several questions without notice of which some notice was given to the Minister for Water Resources. Back came a note saying that I should not ask the Minister for Water Resources the question and that I must ask the Minister Assisting the Minister for Water Resources the question. Can you, Mr President, just tell me who decides who should answer the question after it has been directed to a particular minister? The PRESIDENT : I think it is appropriate that we put that question on notice for a government response because I would like to be informed of that as well. Questions without Notice Resumed
