I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The Police Service has reviewed the figures provided in the question without notice asked on 14 March 2002. For the period July 2000 to February 2001, the Police Service advises there were 1 348 reported offences; and for the period July 2001 to February 2002, there were 1 293 reported offences. (a)-(b) Statistics of this nature are not retained by the Police Service in a computerised format. To obtain the information would require a manual count of each charge. To do that, police officers would have to be removed from operational duties. It may be more appropriate to direct questions about incarceration to the Attorney General. (2) 0.23 per cent per person.
