PAEDIATRIC SERVICES — KARRATHA
I refer to the case of Karratha mother Caroline Stevenson and her eight-month-old baby, Jayden, who was given a referral to see a paediatrician the day after he was born. Ms Stevenson was forced to wait seven months to see a paediatrician and a further six weeks for an ultrasound in Karratha. She has now been asked to wait until May or June for an appointment at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children to determine whether her baby suffered a stroke or a blood clot in utero. (1) What is the average waiting time for Karratha residents to see a paediatrician? (2) Is it acceptable for the parents of a baby with such serious health problems to wait seven months before their child is examined by a paediatrician? (3) Will the minister immediately review paediatric waitlists and ultrasound waitlists in the north west and help this mother get an appointment with a paediatrician at PMH as a matter of urgency? Dr K.D. HAMES

I have to say I think it is fairly disgraceful that the Leader of the Opposition has presented an item like this in this way. He knows very well that there are colleagues on either side with issues to do with particular patients in their electorates, who have come either directly to me or to me through my office, and I have dealt with them quickly and confidentially to make sure that specific issues are sorted out quickly and easily. I will not embarrass any members by naming them or reflecting on their comments back to me about the actions that I have taken. If the Leader of the Opposition wants an answer about a specific patient such as that, all he has to do is phone me. I will give the Leader of the Opposition my personal—I will not, because he will give it to the media! Mr E.S. Ripper : I would not. Dr K.D. HAMES : It is easy for the Leader of the Opposition, as it has been easy for many other members, to get access to me over specific problems. My office and I bend over backwards to sort them out. If the Leader of the Opposition provides the details, we will sort out what needs to be done.
