MATAGARUP BRIDGE —
CONSTRUCTION
569. Mrs L.M. HARVEY to the Minister for Transport:
Minister —
Mr F.M. Logan interjected.
The SPEAKER : Minister for
Corrective Services, I call you to order for the first time.
Mrs L.M. HARVEY : I ask a supplementary
question. Given that the Australian Workers' Union has criticised the
rushed construction of the Matagarup Bridge, can the minister now confirm that Western
Australians have been delivered a compromised piece of infrastructure because
she demanded it be delivered to her politically contrived time frame?

The member talks about a politically
contrived time line. I was away. If I wanted to politically contrive an
opening, I would have told the workers to delay it until I came back.
Mrs L.M. Harvey interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Scarborough!
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : The
proposition in the member for Scarborough's question was ridiculous. I wish
the opening had been delayed until I came back.
Mr W.J. Johnston : I got it
done.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : Thank
goodness the member for Cannington got to finish it! The idea that we would
practically complete it is like finishing a home but the landscaping needs to
be done and the painting needs to be finished—one cannot do everything —
Mrs L.M. Harvey : How about
just bolt the hand railings together?
The SPEAKER : How about you do
not interject. I call you to order for the second time, member for Scarborough.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : Does the
member for Scarborough think someone could fall through? I was actually on
leave. I tried to change my leave. If I wanted to make political opportunities
out of that, I would have told them not to open the bridge. People could have
travelled further and the public could have been disadvantaged until I came
back. That is a ridiculous proposition put by the member for Scarborough.
Mr W.R. Marmion : That's
not what the construction companies say.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : The member
for Nedlands—the engineer. The opposition could not get the bridge
built and it is now worried —
Mr D.J. Kelly : About the
handrail.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : Yes, it is
worried about the handrail. Let us face it, it is a quality project. It is a fantastic
project and Western Australians should be proud that they built this bridge.
