(1) How many gynaecological surgeons are operating at present in metropolitan public hospitals? (2) How many patients does each gynaecological surgeon operate on in a week? (3) How many women in Western Australia are on a waiting list to have surgery for ovarian cancer? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) There are 46 gynaecological surgeons providing services in metropolitan public hospitals, and many are jointly qualified as obstetric specialists. (2) In the 2002-03 financial year, 8 050 gynaecological procedures - this excludes obstetric procedures - were carried out in metropolitan public hospitals. The case load of individual specialists would require considerable labour and resources and, unless there is a specific query relating to an individual specialist, the minister is unable to agree to allocate those resources. (3) Ovarian cancer is not an elective surgical procedure and women with that diagnosis are not placed on the waiting list. Women requiring treatment for ovarian cancer receive treatment as a matter of urgent priority. During 2002-03, 99 women were treated for ovarian cancer and, of those, 46 underwent surgery.
