It is not possible to estimate the number of teachers who have left the profession and may be available to re-join the teaching workforce for the beginning of the 2003 school year. In 2001, 2 593 qualified teachers undertook some casual relief teaching in Department of Education schools. All of these could potentially be available for fixed-term positions in government schools.
